Bhagya is exploring novel polymeric surface modifications for carbon fibre, to enhance tensile and interfacial performance of carbon fibre in various composites. She utilizes a wide array of polymers and polymerization methods in her work.

Bhagya has a strong interest towards high performance and stimuli-responsive polymers, structural batteries and biomimetic materials.
Bhagya holds a BSc. Honours degree (First Class) in Chemistry from the University of Sri Jayewardenapura, Sri Lanka and was awarded two Gold Medals for overall best performance and best performance in Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. In her Honours research she worked on rapidly swelling polymer hydrogels for biological applications.
